Had a Tooth Pulled or Implant Done? Here's How to Recover Smoothly
Whether you've just had a tooth extraction, dental implant, or another oral surgery, the next few days are all about healing and recovery. Following proper aftercare helps you heal faster, avoid infection, and get back to your daily routine with a healthy smile.
Let’s walk you through everything you need to know—step by step.
First 72 Hours: Ice, Rest, and Gentle Care
The first three days after your dental procedure are crucial for reducing swelling, managing pain, and setting the foundation for smooth healing.
Here’s what to do:
Use an ice pack often. Apply an ice pack to your face near the surgical site. Do this as frequently as possible for the first 3 days—the more, the better.
Warm compress (if advised). Starting on day 4, if your dentist recommends it, you can switch to a warm compress to ease any lingering discomfort.
Manage bleeding. It’s normal to have slight bleeding. If it occurs, bite gently on the provided gauze and change it every 30 minutes.
Take your medications on time. Always take your prescribed medications with a full stomach and plenty of water.
Injections? If you’ve been prescribed an injection, it should be administered either today or tomorrow, as per your dentist’s instructions.
Days 1–10: Healing Habits That Matter
For the next 10 days (or until your stitches are removed), following these simple habits can make all the difference in how well and how fast you recover.
What to Eat and Drink:
Stick to soft, lukewarm foods—think mashed potatoes, yogurt, scrambled eggs.
Avoid anything hot, spicy, or crunchy.
Drink only room temperature or cold beverages.
No hot drinks like tea or coffee until cleared by your dentist.
Don’t use straws. Sipping through a straw can disturb the healing site.
Prayers or Daily Rituals:
If you perform prayers that require bowing, do so while seated.
Bring items like a prayer stone closer to your forehead instead of bending your head down.
Physical Activity & Movement:
Avoid bending down or putting pressure on your head. If you need to pick something up, sit instead of bending over.
No swimming, sauna, gym, or sweating activities until you’re cleared.
Take it easy—your body needs rest to heal.
Bathing Tips:
Use lukewarm water only for showers or baths.
Avoid hot showers or soaking in hot water.
Brushing & Oral Hygiene
Keeping your mouth clean is key—but you need to be gentle.
Use a soft manual toothbrush during this period. No electric toothbrushes for now!
Gargle with a saltwater rinse (1 tsp of salt in a glass of warm water) 3–4 times a day, especially after meals.
Do not spit forcefully—let the rinse fall out of your mouth gently.
How to Sleep & Chew Safely
For the next 10 days (or until your stitches are removed), following these simple habits can make all the difference in how well and how fast you recover.
Sleep on the side opposite to the surgical area to avoid pressure.
When chewing, use the side opposite the surgical site.
Avoid blowing your nose forcefully—it may disrupt the healing area.
Reminder! Good Oral Hygiene Helps You Heal Faster
Your mouth heals faster than you might expect—especially when kept clean. Stay calm, follow the care steps, and you’ll be back to normal before you know it.
