What is full mouth rehabilitation?

In short

Full mouth rehabilitation is a planned series of treatments that repairs or replaces many teeth so that they work together properly. It may combine fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and dentures. We build one overall plan, usually in stages, that looks at your bite as well as individual teeth.

What happens, step by step

  1. Full assessment

    Usually one or two visits

A thorough examination of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite, with X-rays and photographs, and impressions or scans. We also ask about grinding, medical history and what you want to achieve.

  2. Treatment plan

    Usually one visit

We explain what we found, the options and what each involves, how it would be staged, and the costs. You take time to think, and you decide.

  3. Getting your mouth healthy

    Depends on the case

We treat gum disease and decay and take out teeth that cannot be saved. This makes sure that the rest of the work has a healthy base.

  4. Rebuilding, in stages

Often several months, depending on the plan and any implants

We rebuild your teeth in a planned order, often a section at a time, so that you can still chew and smile. Temporary teeth are often used along the way to test how the new bite feels.

  5. Final check and maintenance

We adjust your bite, fit a night guard if you need one, and set up regular check-ups to look after the work.

Is full mouth rehabilitation right for you?

  • Many of your teeth are worn down, broken, decayed or missing.
  • Your bite feels wrong, or you chew on only one side.
  • You have had several repairs over the years and want one joined-up plan rather than treating problems one at a time.
  • You grind or clench your teeth and it has worn them down.
  • You are willing to commit to a treatment that may take several months, and to look after your teeth well afterwards.

Options

Crowns and bridges

Crowns cover and strengthen damaged teeth. Bridges replace missing teeth by joining crowns on neighbouring teeth.

Implants

Implants can replace single teeth or support a bridge or a full arch of fixed teeth. They suit people with enough healthy bone.

Dentures

Partial or full dentures replace teeth in a removable way. They can also be held more firmly by implants.

Gum treatment and fillings

Gum health and decay are treated first, as everything else depends on them.

How long does full mouth rehabilitation take?

Typical treatment time
Usually several months, and sometimes longer when implants or gum treatment are involved.
Appointments
Usually many, spread across the stages of the plan.
Anaesthesia
Local anaesthetic for most procedures. Ask us about other options.
Recovery
Depends on the treatment. Teeth can be sore or sensitive after each stage.
Cost
Depends on the number of teeth and the materials. We give you a written, staged plan before starting.

Aftercare

  • Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth every day, including around crowns, bridges and implants.
  • Wear your night guard every night if we give you one.
  • Avoid biting very hard foods or objects with new work.
  • Come to regular check-ups. Your bite and the new teeth need monitoring over time.
  • Contact us if a crown or bridge feels loose or high, or your bite changes.

Risks and limitations

  • It is a long treatment, and it can mean many appointments and temporary teeth for a while.
  • Teeth may be sensitive after preparation, and some teeth need further treatment such as root canal if the nerve is affected.
  • Your bite may need adjusting after fitting, and it can take time to feel natural.
  • Crowns, bridges and dentures can chip, loosen or wear, and may need repair or replacing.
  • Untreated grinding can damage new work, which is why a night guard is often advised.
  • If you smoke or have gum disease, the risk of problems is higher.

Alternatives

  • Treating problems one at a time as they come up, which costs less at once but may not fix the bite.
  • Replacing teeth with dentures only.
  • A smaller plan that deals only with the most urgent teeth.

Questions about full mouth rehabilitation

What does full mouth rehabilitation include?

It depends on you, because we plan it around your teeth. It can include treating gum disease and decay, root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, implants, dentures and a night guard. We assess your teeth, gums and bite, then set out one plan in stages, with costs, before anything is done.

How long does it take?

Usually several months, and sometimes longer if implants or gum treatment are involved. The time depends on how many teeth are involved and how they heal. We divide the work into stages so you are not left without teeth, and we give you an estimated timeline once we have examined you.

Will I be without teeth during treatment?

Not usually. We plan the stages so that you can eat and smile, often using temporary crowns, bridges or dentures between steps. Some stages are less comfortable than others. We tell you in advance what to expect at each one.

Is full mouth rehabilitation the same as a smile makeover?

No. A smile makeover mainly changes how your front teeth look. Full mouth rehabilitation is about function as well, such as how your teeth bite together, and it deals with worn, broken or missing teeth throughout the mouth. Some people need both, and we will explain which fits your situation.

Why does my bite matter?

If your teeth do not meet evenly, some take too much force, which can lead to wear, cracks, loose teeth or jaw discomfort. When we rebuild teeth, we plan how they meet. That is why we assess the bite first and may use temporary teeth to test it before making final ones.

Can it be done in one go?

Sometimes parts of it can be done close together, but most plans are staged for safety and healing. Rushing can affect the result. We will tell you honestly what is realistic for your case and how to fit appointments around your life.

  • Dental implants

A fixed way to replace one tooth, several teeth or a full arch, planned from a scan at your consultation.

  • Veneers

Thin shells of porcelain or composite that cover the front of a tooth to change its colour, shape or size.

  • Cosmetic dentistry

Whitening, bonding and smile planning to change how your teeth look, with a clear explanation of each option's limits.
